My first karate class was nothing like I thought it would be, it was better. My daughter Jo Jo has been in martial arts since she was six years olds. I never really thought to take class with her but as I have learned more and more my curiosity peaked.
I taught Zumba for over three years but I felt like I had two left feet. I couldn’t keep my left foot out of the way of my right and I was following the instructors like they were Zumba instructors: mirroring what they were doing. By mirroring their movements I was doing everything wrong!
Many people believe Zumba to be difficult until you get the rhythm; but even after you get the rhythm it still looks hard. Karate is different: it looks really easy and flawless but when you participate you quickly realize that it is more difficult than it looks. Angles are important, the way you step is just as important as the angle of your hands.
The Rising Star Martial Arts Dojo experience is NOTHING like your first Zumba experience. In Zumba you’re told to just do your best and follow the movements as closely as possible and then you watch the instructor and wiggle around hoping to get one more movements correct. The instructors at Rising Star are quick to answer questions, encourage you, and will even step beside you and show how it’s done, if that makes you feel more comfortable.
The movements look slow and sharp but when I got out there and tried it, I couldn’t keep up! I could not believe how much I had to concentrate to do the same thing I have seen my daughter do a thousand times! I was sweating by the end of it.
Let me explain, the class did not feel impossible. I did not feel like I was in an uncomfortable place but Karate was new and challenging. I felt like I had done something at the end of the class and I am overwhelmed about the thought of returning.
All of the Instructors at the Rising Star are helpful, kind, and what to see their students succeed. They push you to do better and encourage you to keep going when things start to get a little difficult. I truly enjoyed my first karate class and look forward to returning to learn more.
